Bala vihar school for the mentally retarded works with children and adults with all mental challenges
Balavihar supports 26 childredn and adults at homes in the kilpauk, day care centre. They provide scientific assessment and diagnostic services and recommend appropriate training to achieve maximum level of performance. They also run a Special School which trains children with mental retardation in self â€“ help skills, communication and interaction skills, functional academics, domestic chores, leisure time activities and community orientation. The homes provide shelter, food, clothing and health care to destitutes and orphans. The Rehabilitation Programmes revolve around various therapies such as Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy ,Yoga Therapy ,Play Therapy and Vocational Training â€“ covering training in Weaving, Paper bag and Envelope making, Dairy and Agri-Horticultural activities. These skills lead to gainful employment in the community as well as self-employment.
